The Bible is a six-billion best seller

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Not only did God create “the heavens and the earth,” He also still owns the biggest best selling book of all time.

The Bible has been translated into its 700th language.

“This is exciting news,” said James Poole, executive director of Wycliffe Bible Translators.

More than 5.7 billion people — that’s billion with a ‘b’ — in the world, speaking 700 different languages and dialects, now have the Bible in their own language.

‘Lord of the Rings’ in the top five

Needless to say, The Holy Bible is the most popular book in history, followed by The Little Red Book:  Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung, written by Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung), former chairman of the Communist Party — one billion copies; Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes — 500 million; A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens — 200 million; and Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien — 150 million copies.

Which particular portion of the world’s population received the 700th translation of the Bible was difficult to pin down, but it was one of three recent translations —

Remote ethnic groups

The Huichol (Wixáritari) Bible, used by an indigenous group of people of Mexico; the Ellomwe Bible, read in Malawi and Mozambique; and the Igede Bible, which is used by a Nigerian ethnic group.

There are now translations of the Bible in more than 3,350 of the 7,350 languages used on Earth, including 245 sign languages.

However, there are more than 1.5 billion people — one in five of the world’s population — who still don’t have a Bible in their language.
