TWO OF THE MOST FAMOUS GOALS IN SOCCER HISTORY
DIEGO MARADONA, 1960–2020
Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona died in Buenos Aires on Wednesday after suffering a massive heart attack at the age of 60.
Maradona scored two of the most famous — and infamous — goals in football history in the 1986 World Cup against England in Mexico City in a span of four minutes.
THE GOAL OF THE CENTURY
Just four minutes after his infamous “Hand of God” goal (second video), Maradona single-handedly beat the entire English defence and drilled the second goal of the game.
The little man could run! Cutting in from the right side of the midfield, Maradona dribbled for 60 yards all alone, dodging past four English players and slotting the ball past the goalie into the net.
The goal was voted as the greatest goal of all time.
THE ‘HAND OF GOD’ GOAL
The first half of the 1986 World Cup game went scoreless but the second half is now part of sporting history.
Maradona scored the game’s two goals, the Goal of the Century, and this one:
Maradona appeared to touch the ball but the referee didn’t have a clear view of the crowded penalty area and allowed the goal to stand.
Maradona said in an interview after the game that “the goal was scored a little with Maradona’s head and a little with the hand of God.”
MORE MARADONA IN ACTION
Maradona rose from the slums of Buenos Aires to become one of the greatest, if not the greatest soccer player in the world.
He lived a spectacular life in the fast lane of women, booze and drugs and fathered many children. Photos of his life HERE.
Wonderful post tribute!
Thanks. He always played a thrilling game.
