In The Great Escaper Michael Caine plays 89-year-old British veteran Bernard Jordan who escapes from a nursing home in Sussex to get together with his wartime buddies in Normandy at the 2014 commemoration ceremony.

Glenda Jackson, who plays his wife, helps him elude the caregivers. The caper made international headlines and Bernard Jordan became a symbol of the indefatigable English spirit.

The wily vet told nursing home staff he was going for a walk, but instead, wearing his wartime medals under a gray raincoat, he boarded an overnight ferry in Portsmouth for the trip across the Channel to Normandy.

The nursing home reported him missing, launching an extensive police search. Authorities only discovered where he was when a veteran phoned the night before the June 6 ceremony and said, ‘Mr. Jordan is safe and will return when he’s good and ready.’

Bernard Jordan died a year and a half later, in December of 2015, at the age of 90. His wife of more than 65 years died a week after her husband at 88.
